Wishing Every Day Was Groundhog's Day

(video by Braddock Basket)
So I'm pretty obsessed with groundhogs. They are totally like in the top five cutest animals of all time. Aaand, I'm born on Groundhog's Day which I've been told (lied to) since I was this big (points to cat) makes me part groundhog.

If only...

One thing I LOVE to do is to take a drive with Dave and kids on Sunday and spot groundhogs on the side of the highway (live ones). Today we saw EIGHT of them! One was running. RUNNING! And it's furry bottom undulated as it ran all jiggly and huge and awesome. Holy shit I hope I dream of that tonight.

Shameless Self-Promotion

"Mommy, help us!"

So in case you don't have anything worked out yet for a Mother's Day gift, AND in case your mom is a freaky nut-job... COME ON OVER TO THE SHOP! I've just slashed (slashed might be a strong word) prices a bit.

"It seems like you're trying to get rid of some inventory, Sharon."

"That would be a great observation, Mysterio! I'm indeed making way for the soon-to-be-wildly-famous Dr. Mortimer's Highly Effective Stab Doll empire! WILDLY famous!" I'm using The Secret...

I Love My Nerd Kids!

Alex and Nora as characters from Homestuck
What mother wouldn't be proud of kids that spend the whole weekend dressed up like on-line comic characters who then meet up with other kids dressed like on-line comic characters in public places throughout the city?

While raising nerd kids presents some challenges (incessant shopping for props for cosplays, countless hours on the computer traveling to distant worlds, potential association with creeps), nerd culture can be a wonderful and healthy outlet for youth. The amount of research that goes into developing their personae helps kids to make future adult choices. When shopping for costumes, a kid has to evaluate cost versus quality. They have to calculate when cosplay/con events occur versus shipping time of their costume elements. They have to organize schedules of cosplay/con events versus family schedules.

And nerd culture takes up a lot of kid's "free" time. Time that they COULD be spending doing drugs or stealing car stereos. Time that they COULD be participating in life-threatening sports. In general, nerd kids get into less trouble and have a greater life expectancy. I'm sure there's a statistic to back that up.

Yay nerds!

OMG! Please Come!

So putting together this exhibit has been just a tiny bit like giving birth. But just like the real deal, when it all comes together an unbelievable feeling of joy and release washes over you and then you are left with the most beautiful gift in your arms. Or in your gallery.

Holy shit! These pieces are simply stunning. I LOOOOOVE my MAW's and I of course love my Open Door artists. The marriage of the two in this exhibit is breathtaking.

I hope you can join us on Saturday to celebrate this fantastic collaboration.

And while we're all here I'd like to give a humongous shout out to my coworkers for all of their awesome help and for not stabbing me. I love you!

Maggot Monday!

Gross! Flies!

Plop! There's our little guy!

Getting all cleaned up!

So sometimes when friends find interesting creatures dead on the pavement they find their way to my desk in a baggie. My co-worker found this adorable little guy behind our studio and she knew that I'd want him (her?) for my collection. But he was fresh and quickly starting to rot. Gotta hurry! I took him home and covered him in rock salt to dry him out and preserve him for display. A month later I freed him from his casket and EWWW! Flies! Apparently the little guy had maggots that I wasn't savvy to and during my little bat's cloistering they matured and rose to the top as flies who unfortunately (fortunately?) found their demise.

Haven't come up with a name yet. If you have any ideas, feel free to share!

Happy Eat-ster!!!

White Bread, Black Cat
I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday! I feel like a dick for staying behind and not going to my in-laws, but MAN I really needed a day to catch up with the teetering piles of neglect. I'm getting the studio all cleaned up after finishing my piece for This Inspired That (which opens on Saturday the 14th from 5-7pm at Open Door Art Studio - PLEASE COME!!!). OH, and my cat was LONG overdue for a breading. Next up is to paint some forgotten toys and to tackle a laundry basket OVERFLOWING with mismatched socks. And to breathe in and to breathe out and to be thankful.

There is not room for Death,
Nor atom that his might could render void:
Thou - Thou art Being and Breath,
And what Thou art may never be destroyed.  ~Emily Bronte

Dealing With It...

Had a bad day? We all have from time to time. The best way to handle your situation is to probably...
A. Drink loads and loads of alcohol, the more varied the better.
B. Make a skin mask from the pets of those who've wronged you.
C. Watch episodes of funny shows that you've dvr'd and never gotten to.
D. Plot and scheme.
E. Blame others.
F. Feel bad about everything you've ever done.
D. Make art.
E. Several of the above.

How was your day? Louse-y!

A poem inspired by Cat Lynch and a mutual situation...

Off to the camp! Must hurry, must hurry!
Prepare for the day! I bustle and scurry.
The soldiers filter in, I smile warmly and greet them.
But WEE enemies sneak in thinking, "I hope I can eat them!"
Telepathically triggered, I look around and I find,
The ones thinking the evil I heard with my mind.
"I found you!" I say, and I call all to arms,
We build forts and fight battles so that no one is harmed.
The wee ones retreat, they know they've been bested,
But we're left scratching our heads until we're all safely tested.

Coworker Blog Crush

Oh, and I changed my blog look again. "You change your blog like you change your hair color!" Oh, and I'm dying my hair today. PHOTOS TO COME! If it doesn't turn out total shit. "Maybe people in their forties should stick with mom hair colors." You'll have to speak louder, I'm a little hard of hearing.

ANYwho... So I have two coworkers who blog and HOLY SHIT!!! I LOOOOOOOOOOVE their blogs! And I'm totally not even saying that because they both read my blog and are amazing people. But they do and they are which makes me love them EVEN MORE! Click on their respective pirated images to be whisked away to their fantastical stylins. I promise you won't be disappointed!
